forgotten clothes
Just compiled some old clothes for G0odwill; found some things that brought up old memories. I have to throw them out, have been holding onto for too long & cannot wear anymore:
- Blue & pink small-flowered-print, apron-type, knee-length, short-sleeved old-fashioned dress, ties at the waist:
Found at thrift store in New 0rleans, about $12, fit like a dream. Wore first time the next morning after having sex with one of the most romantic romances of my life (long-distance, short-lived), guy I met at Jazz Fest. Best memory, that morning, he took me to breakfast, and announced loudly at cashier "Oh my god isn't she beautiful" (he was very outgoing!), and everyone at counter smiled happily and said yes, smiled at us, happy for us, I felt like I would melt into the floor with happiness and shyness and desire. - Huge, clunky, felt, fake leopard-skin platform shoes:
Again found at used clothes store, so awesome I wore all over the place even though they were so slippery no matter how many non-slip pads I pasted on the bottom. Best memory: I wore with red shiny pants the morning after Tom & I got married on the plane back from Vegas to SF; I also wore on our first 'proper' date; climbed one of SF's famously steep hills to meet him at the T0nga Room, was sweaty and embarrassed, had fallen and skinned a knee. - Black, shiny, tight 'pleather' pants:
Loved these so much I once was told by a guy "I want to write a song about you in those pants". Best memory: Vaguely remembered New Year's Eve with girlfriend in Central Square, Boston; dancing, got drinks bought for us all night, was young and thought I was invincible, one guy said to me "a jewel like you shouldn't be going to the movies alone".... - Purple feaux-fur, fitted top:
Furry thing, tight & so furry everyone wanted to touch it, wore with red pants and leopard shoes, best memory: Family brunch morning after little brother got married; my sister-in-laws' brother kept staring at me in a deviant way, got Tom so mad... - Marriage dress!
That tight, black nylong dress with red roses printed all over, tight with a ruffle around the knees, looked like a flapper dress. Wore with clunky black rose-printed platforms and fishnets. Tom wore a suit. Best memory: Getting out the cab at the chapel; driver had waited for us to get our license, he said "Wow what a lucky guy!"... And I have a photo of Tom & I kissing, me in the dress, under plastic pink flowers of the chapel, after we got married (the woman offered me a tissue when I cried a little bit). Then we went for champagne, around 1 a.m., I had to suck in my stomach it was so tight. But it was a dream. - Black-&-white plaid stretch bellbottoms:
Found in thrift store in Memphis, came in a plastic bag with matching top (I could never get the courage to wear both at once). Best memory: Wearing pants while dancing on Beale Street during one of Elvis' birthdays; they itched but I kept at it. Wore with high-top sandals... Everytime I wore these pants I was drinking bourbon on the rocks.

I don't know why, but this is one of my favorite entries of all time. Those memories seem so real. Itchy pants and slippery shoes and all. I love every word.
I agree with Jumbly, it's like beautiful fashion flashback. I'm all for purging possessions but you have to keep the leopard print shows and marriage dress!
Wonderful trip through memory lane with you! So vivid. Xo and here's to cleaning house.
This post in INCREDIBLE. Loved everything about it! You're so good : )
